The Daleks... life support units transformed into powerful combat machines for the mutant creatures that the Kaled race would eventually become.  Kaled chief scientist Davros, having created the Daleks was supposedly killed by them and forgotten.  The Daleks escaped their destroyed bunker and eventually rose to become a ruthless space empire.
